Making Time to Look Back

I am making time to look back into the hanging files and hard drives. It’s becoming quite the adventure. I found the scan of this image, and it brought me right back to the time I was crisscrossing the country selling my photographic prints at outdoor art shows. After pulling all-nighters printing, matting, and framing, I would set off like a bat out of hell, late, anxious—to sell my contemplative images of nature.

But! This image helped change the way I made photographs. Instead of pulling over, putting my camera on the tripod, and hoping to get a big bolt of lightning—I guess I didn’t have the time—I put the camera on the steering wheel, opening the shutter, and drove into the storm.

“I wonder what would happen if . . . ” became a mantra to this day.
