At a really big airport, an escalator wasn’t working. And as everyone—everyone—approached it, we all stumbled a bit, the way you do when you hesitate as the moving sidewalk ends or the escalator begins. But it was a non-moving escalator! I was captivated, stumbled, and walked to the side, watching the parade of stumbles. I was hoping for someone to show up that had never been on an escalator—just to check out what they did.
